Pool A of the 2023/23 European Rugby Champions Cup sees Bristol Bears host Lyon. Also in this pool are Saracens, Bordeaux, Connacht and Bears, all hoping to finish in the top four and qualify for the knockout stages. Bristol are eighth in the English Premiership with only Gloucester and Newcastle Falcons below them in the table. Last weekend saw them beat Gloucester 51-26 at home. That was their second home win of the season in the Rugby Premiership, the other a win over Leicester Tigers. Defeats have come against Sale Sharks and Harlequins, the latter by just two points.The win over Gloucester ended a run of five consecutive losses.

Lyon are also struggling for wins at present. They are 12th in the Top 14 and just one place above the relegation spots. They lost 29-14 at Castres Olimpique in their most recent fixture. Before that they had beaten Aviron Bayonnais at home and that ended a run of three successive defeats in which 96 points were conceded. Away form for Lyon has been a big problem for them this season. All five of their away games in Top 14 have been lost. In four of those away games, at least 25 points were conceded by Lyon. Bristol will have gained some confidence from last week's win and can get their European Rugby Champions Cup campaign off to a winning start with a victory over Lyon.
