Top seed Ben Shelton bids to reach his first ATP Tour clay court final. He faces fourth seeded Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the last four of the US Clay Court Championships. Shelton has had some excellent results on hard courts but hasn’t repeated that success on clay. His only appearance at Roland Garros saw him beaten in the first round. Shelton was ranked 16th at the start of this ATP 250 tournament and is 18th in the Live Race. To get to this semifinal, he’s came from behind to beat qualifier Zizou Bergs in round two. He had a tight match in the last eight beating unseeded Brandon Nakashima 7-5 7-6.

Tomas Martin Etcheverry is the fourth seed in this US Clay Court Championship. He was ranked 30th at the start of this tournament but is down a place in the live rankings. He’ll want to stay in the top 32 to ensure a seeding at Roland Garros. Etcheverry is defending the points he won when reaching the final here in Houston last year. The Argentinian has made it to this year’s last four without dropping a set. He beat Daniel Elahi Galan (both sets won 6-4) and then defeated Michael Mmoh in the last eight. Etcheverry won the first set and his opponent then retired when 1-0 up in the second. The Argentinian is in his first last four this year. Before this tournament he’d reached the quarterfinals in two South American clay court tournaments. This looks like being a close match and we go for three sets to be played.
