Sixth seed Beatriz Haddad Maia will battle next in Abud Dhabi, the unseeded Magda Linette. They will square off in the second round with the winner setting up a quarterfinal showdown with either Ons Jabeur or Emma Raducanu. Magda Linette is making her Abu Dhabi debut and so far so good for the Pole. She defeated the wildcard Alexandra Eala in the first round without dropping a set. Her second win of the season ended a run of four successive defeats. The 31-year-old has had a torrid start to the season. She will be hoping that the surroundings of a new tournament allow her to settle her nerves. Linette is a strong performer on hard courts despite her unconvincing performances thus far. She has won over 200 matches on the surface and it is the only surface she has won at least 100 matches on. Advancing to this round has moved her up one place to 55th in the live ranking.

Beatriz Haddad Maia has returned to this WTA 500 event for the second time. She made her debut last season and battled through to the semifinals. The Brazilian number one will be hoping to at the very least defend the points she won. Maia also won her first-round tie in straight sets, getting the better of Wang Xiyu. This was the fourth win this season for the current world number 16. Maia has had an inconsistent start to the year and has lost three times. She has however looked sharp in her recent outings and has won three of her last four fixtures. The 27-year-old defeated Linette in their first and only encounter to date last May in Rome.
