Unseeded Ashlyn Krueger attempts to cause an upset in the second round of the Guadalajara Open Akron. The American takes on fifth seed Magdalena Frech for a place in the quarter-finals. TIme for our match prediction.
Kreuger has already had to play one match in this WTA 500 hard court tournament. Round one saw her beat fellow unseeded player Tatjana Maria in straight sets. It was a close first set going to 7-5 but Krueger only lost two games in the second.
This is an important week for Krueger who was ranked 51st in the latest list. The points earned this time last year when winning the Japan Open are being lost and that's why she's down to 68th in the live rankings.
Recent weeks have seen her performing well against seeded players with Leylah Fernandez, Donna Vekic and Mirra Andreeva all being beaten. A win over Frech will see her go into her first WTA hard court quarter-final of 2024.
Magdalena Frech received a bye into the second round of this tournament. The Pole was 43rd in the new ranking list and is two places higher in the live list which is a new career-high for her.
Frech has only reached one WTA hard court quarter-final this year. That came in Monterrey last month but no top 60 ranked players were beaten. One of her two wins saw her have to go to three sets to beat world number 277 Lina Glushko.
Her last two matches have both been lost. The winner of this match faces either wild card Marina Stakusic or top seed Jolena Ostapenko in the last eight. Krueger looks to be in better form and we tip her to win.
