Seventh seed Andrey Rublev hopes to make it into the last eight of the Madrid Masters for only the second time. He's up against the 24th seed Tallon Griekspoor in round four of this outdoor clay court tournament.  Rublev made it to the quarter-finals here two years ago and has made a disappointing start to this year's European clay court season. The Russian has played in Monte Carlo and Barcelona and been beaten in his first match in both of those tournaments. He had lost four successive matches before beating qualifier Facundo Bagnis in round two in Madrid after receiving a first round bye. He followed that up with a victory over the 27th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Rublev leads Griekspoor 2-0 in previous meetings with both matches played last year. This is their first match on clay.

The winner of this match will face either second seed (and defending champion) Carlos Alcaraz or 23rd seeded Jan-Lennard Struff in the last eight. This is the first time that Griekspoor has made it past the second round in Madrid. He's also never got past round two in other clay court tournaments such as Roland Garros, Monte Carlo and Rome. That's not to say he can't play on this surface as the Dutchman won eight clay court tournaments on clay. He only won one of his three clay court matches played this year before heading to Madrid. The world number 25 (up a place in the live rankings) has beaten unseeded Taro Daniel (after losing the first set) and then 11th seed Holger Rune in three sets. We tip Rublev to reach the last eight.
