Anastasia Potapova, 30th seed, will begin her Miami Open campaign in the second round against the unseeded Danielle Collins. The winner will then play either Ons Jabeur or Elina Avanesyan for a place in the fourth round. Anastasia Potapova is coming off a quarterfinal finish at Indian Wells. Though she has been inconsistent with her performances, it has been rare to see Potapova eliminated early at a tournament this season. She has managed three quarterfinal finishes and reached the third round in Dubai. This should have her confident of at the very least equaling her last eight result at last year’s Miami edition. Potapova has compiled a 10-6 overall record and has managed eight wins in 13 outings on hard courts. She has dropped three places to 32nd in the live ranking.

Danielle Collins defeated compatriot Bernarda Pera in the first round in three sets. This extended her record of never losing a first-round tie in this WTA 1000 event. The American has made five previous appearances in Miami and was a semifinalist on her debut in 2018. Last season she was eliminated in the third round. Collins has won 14 times in 21 outings this season. She has however only twice gone past the second round in the seven tournaments she has participated in. One of those times was at the 1000 event in Doha. The 30-year-old former world number seven is currently placed at number 53 in the WTA.
