Anisimova has defeated Sabalenka four times in their six previous matchups, most recently two seasons ago. The American will be confident of adding to her dominance in this fixture. Playing with a protected ranking, Anisimova defeated 10th seed Anna Kalinskaya in the last round.

The match was abruptly ended in the second set when Kalinskaya was forced to retire injured. Anisimova, who has compiled a 15-9 record, had won the first set 6-2. The 22-year-old has returned to the Rogers Cup after missing out last year due to injury. Making it to this round has propelled her 38 places in the live ranking and she is now placed 94th.

Aryna Sabalenka won the last two times she was paired up against Anisimova. She emerged tops in their latest showdown earlier this year in straight sets during her title-winning campaign in Melbourne.

Coupling this run with her good form this year, the current world number three will be fired up for another win in Toronto. Sabalenka, a semi-finalist in this event three years ago, got over her third-round jinx by defeating Katie Boulter.

The Belarussian had lost in the third round for two successive seasons. She is yet to drop a set after two rounds in Toronto and has now improved her record to 34-10. The winner from this encounter will battle Emma Navarro or Taylor Townsend for a place in the final.
