Amanda Anisimova has returned to the tour and will play unseeded Alize Cornet in Charleston next. The two will battle in the first round with the winner advancing to play top seed Jessica Pegula. The season has switched to clay and this will be Anisimova’s first fixture on the surface. It is also the American’s first match in two months. Anisimova was last on the court in Melbourne where she lost in the fourth round to eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka. Her absence was due to a muscle injury and she will hope to have fully recovered. Anisimova defeated Cornet the first time they met. This was in 2019 in Mallorca on grass. The 22-year-old’s inactivity has seen her drop to 263rd place in the live ranking. Anisimova made the semifinals in Charleston in 2022 which is the last time she participated in the event.

Alize Cornet is also a former Charleston semifinalist. She achieved this feat in 2008 in her debut. Since then she has only once gone past the third round. Last season, she was eliminated in the second round. The veteran Frenchwoman is having a torrid season. She has managed just three wins in 10 outings and has only once won multiple matches at an event. Cornet has not won in six matches and all three of her wins were achieved in Cluj on indoor hard court. The 34-year-old retired from her last outing. This was in the San Luis Challenger. It was her first appearance on clay for the season. Cornet had lost the first set against Xiaodi You and was down 4-2 in the second before her withdrawal. The former world number 11 has dropped out of the top 100 and is ranked 102 in the live ranking. Cornet also defeated Anisimova on grass. This was in Berlin three seasons ago.
