The penultimate Round of 16 match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations will see Algeria taking on DR Congo at Stade Moulay Hassan in Rabat on Tuesday night. The winner of this match between the Desert Warriors and the Leopards will meet either Nigeria or Mozambique in Marrakesh in the quarter-final on January 10. Check out our match prediction below!
After back-to-back early exits in the last two editions of the AFCON, the Fennec Foxes are looking much better this time around. They topped a tricky Group E and came through the group stage of this competition as one of only two teams - along with the Super Eagles - with a perfect record of three wins in three games.
DR Congo, meanwhile, are featuring in their 14th knockout stage of the AFCON, which included finishing fourth in the 2023 tournament in the Ivory Coast. They came through Group D with an unbeaten record (W2 D1) but have not got the better of this opponent in their last six attempts (D4 L2). Let’s get into the key stats.

Algeria - DR Congo: Form Analysis
Algeria defeated Equatorial Guinea 3-1 in their last match to finish as winners of Group E with a perfect record. They have only conceded a single goal in this competition, which is the joint-fewest to date.
With those results, the Desert Warriors have now avoided defeat in their last 13 matches across all competitions in regulation time. Their only loss in this period was in a penalty shootout against the UAE at the FIFA Arab Cup.
The Fennec Foxes have one of the most lethal attacking lineups on paper at the AFCON. In their last 10 matches across all competitions, they’ve scored two or more goals in seven games.
Both of Algeria’s AFCON titles were won when the tournament was hosted in North Africa!
However, there is a case to be made that Vladimir Petkovic’s side has not faced an opponent that possesses the quality of DR Congo, who also emerged from their group with an unbeaten record (W2 D1).
Sebastian Desabre’s side’s late push to pile on goals against Botswana in their last match in an effort to edge Senegal to top spot underlines their ambition after finishing fourth in the Ivory Coast.
Les Leopards are now unbeaten in their last eight matches across all competitions (W7 D1). They maintained six clean sheets during this period, while only conceding against Nigeria and the Teranga Lions.

Algeria & DR Congo Squad Analysis
While Petkovic has a wealth of talent at his disposal, Riyad Mahrez remains the main man for the Desert Warriors, currently the joint-top scorer in this competition with three goals in two games.
Bayer Leverkusen youngster Ibrahim Maza is proving his ability on the big stage, currently with three direct goal involvements in this competition, including scoring against Equatorial Guinea when he was deployed as the number nine.
One player that we will be keeping our eye on here is Feyenoord’s Anis Hadj Moussa, who has two assists in two appearances. We expect he will start on the bench, but he could be a game-changer late on.
Mahrez and Axel Tuanzebe made CAF’s AFCON best 11 in the group stage of the competition!
Tuanzebe has struggled with injury for Aston Villa this season, making just eight league appearances to date. However, he was rested by Desabre against Botswana and will have a massive role to play alongside Chancel Mbemba in defence in this match.
With Yoane Wissa not in the squad for the AFCON, veteran Cedric Bakambu will lead the line for the Leopards. He scored the opener against Senegal, and after sitting out the last match, the 34-year-old should be well-rested.
Gael Kakuta made the most of his only appearance of the tournament, bagging a brace and an assist against Botswana, and he could be one to keep an eye on coming off the bench in this match.

Algeria look like the real deal in this competition, and given the wealth of talent they possess in attack, they are a team that can easily score multiple goals when they are performing at their best.
DR Congo are a solid defensive unit, but they will know that keeping a clean sheet will be a big ask against the Fennec Foxes. The Leopards will have to try and get an early goal here to put the pressure on the fancied North Africans. Therefore, our Algeria vs DR Congo prediction is BTTS.
