Qualifier Alexandra Shubladze has advanced to the last four in Hong Kong, where she will be up against Claire Liu. Shubladze is officially the Hong Kong giant killer, after securing this slot courtesy of a straight-set win over top-seed Sorana Cirstea.
This wasn’t a fluke at all, as she had earlier beaten seventh seed Liudmila Samsonova. The world No.136 is now two wins away from a first tour title.
Liu has also claimed a big scalp on her way to reaching the Hong Kong semis in her second appearance. The American started off with a straight-set victory over Tatiana Prozorova before beating eighth seed Katie Boulter in the second round.
She then dispatched Zeynep Sonmez to book this last-four slot. Notably, Liu hasn’t dropped a set and will be keen on the same against Shubladze.
She has played close to five hours fewer than Shubladze and will hope it aids her to rise past the tricky Czech. Liu comes into this match placed 99th in te live ranking.
