Matchday 10 in the Premier League sees 20th-placed Sunderland taking on fourth-place Chelsea at the Stadium of Light. The Black Cats have managed only a single point from their last six while Chelsea have strung together three wins from their last four. Our match prediction backs the visitors to continue that momentum in the north-east.
Sunderland are finding it difficult to cope with European football in the midst of a demanding Premier League season. They’ve accumulated just five points from their first nine fixtures, putting them two points from safety. It’s a far cry from the incredible season that they had last year, where they finished in seventh place in their first season after winning promotion from the Championship.
Chelsea have experienced an up-and-down season so far in Xabi Alonso’s first year at the club. To their credit, they’ve managed to amass nine points from the last 12 available, giving them 16 for the campaign and putting them eight points off leaders Arsenal. The current campaign finds these two clubs in very different positions, though the Black Cats did complete the double over the Blues last season, including a 2-1 victory in this fixture.

Sunderland - Chelsea: Form Analysis
Sunderland fell to a disappointing 3-1 away defeat to promoted side Coventry last weekend. It was not the finest hour for the defence, as they conceded the first two goals via defensive blunders, while the third was a wicked deflection.
It was the team’s sixth league defeat of the season. It’s a situation we’ve seen all too often: a team not accustomed to the rigours of balancing European football, with Sunderland competing in the Europa League for the first time in 53 years. On the plus side, the Black Cats have started strongly in the UEL, winning two of their first three games. Across all competitions, Sunderland have managed only one win in their last five.
Sunderland have failed to score in their last three Premier League matches at the Stadium of Light.
Chelsea head up north off the back of a morale-boosting 2-0 home win over Manchester United last weekend, a needed response after crashing out of the EFL Cup on penalties to Liverpool three days prior.
Alonso’s side have now won three of their last four in the league, scoring nine goals during that stretch. Their 19-goal tally is the third best in the division, trailing only Brighton and Man City. The 2-0 win over United also saw the Blues keep two clean sheets in a three-game span for the first time since December 2025.

Sunderland & Chelsea Squad Analysis
Sunderland are stretched at the back and will be without three defenders for this match. Nordi Mukiele and Dan Ballard miss out with injury, while centre back Omar Alderete serves a suspension following his sending off against Coventry.
Captain Granit Xhaka will be crucial if the Black Cats are to spring an upset here. The 34-year-old has played every minute of the Premier League so far and leads the team in chances created (20), big chances created (5), line breaking passes per 90 (15.0) and expected assists (1.8).
The injuries are piling up for the away side as Xabi Alonso could be without up to six players for this match. Among them are Reece James, Maxence Lacroix, Jorrel Hato and the team’s joint-leading goalscorer, Joao Pedro.
Joao Pedro is dealing with a thigh injury and is still a few weeks away from a return.
It’s a tough blow for the Brazilian, who was in some of the best form of his career to start the campaign, netting five goals and three assists in six league appearances.
Emi Martinez is back in training after suffering a fractured jaw and could be in contention to start here. However, they might opt to be cautious with him, especially given Mike Penders’ encouraging performances in his last two starts.
The 21-year-old was ultimately rewarded with his first clean sheet as a starter for Chelsea in the 2-0 win over United.

Our Sunderland vs Chelsea Prediction
Sunderland did the double over Chelsea last season, but the current situation for both clubs paints a very different picture this time around. The hosts have lost five of their last six and have failed to score a single goal in their last three home league games. They now face a Chelsea side whose defence is beginning to find its feet, keeping two clean sheets in their last three Premier League outings.
The absence of some key defenders only compounds the problem, while Sunderland also face a significant rest disadvantage after their Europa League commitments on Thursday. Our Sunderland vs Chelsea prediction: Chelsea wins.
Sunderland vs Chelsea Alternative Predictions
Morgan Rogers to score or assist
Rogers has six goals and four assists in 12 appearances across all competitions this season, and has scored in each of his last two outings. With Joao Pedro sidelined by a thigh injury, more of Chelsea’s attacking burden falls on the 24-year-old against a Sunderland back line missing Nordi Mukiele, Dan Ballard and the suspended Omar Alderete.
