Thirteenth seed Alexander Zverev and the unseeded Tallon Griekspoor will on Tuesday square off at the Canadian Open. The winner of this first-round tie will book a showdown with either J.J. Wolf or Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Zverev is coming off an impressive clay court campaign that culminated in him winning his first title of the year. The German won the Hamburg Open in his last outing and in so doing ended an almost two-year wait for a tour title. He's won 20 of the 27 matches he played on clay and will hope this form rubs off on hard court where he has struggled. Zverev was shaky at the start of the year and managed only six wins in 13 outings on hard court. One of his losses on the surface was against Griekspoor in Rotterdam which evened out this series at 1-1. With his form and having had a full week’s rest, the 26-year-old will be confident of winning here. Winning in Hamburg has catapulted him right back into the ATP top 20. He starts the week in 16th place in the live ranking. Zverev is a former Champion in Toronto. He won the title in 2017.
Tallon Griekspoor is making his debut in Toronto and arrives here after losing the final in Washington. The Dutchman lost a final for the first time this year as he fell in straight sets to Daniel Evans on Monday. He will hope to recover in time for this showdown with Zverev. Despite the loss, Griekspoor is having an amazing season; his best at tour level. He has become a champion on the tour for the first time and has also risen massively in the world rankings. The 27-year-old is currently ranked 26th in the live ranking which is a career high placing for him. He has been in terrific form on hard court where the majority of his victories and one of his two titles have come. Griekspoor has compiled a 13-5 record on hard court and claimed his first win against Zverev on the surface earlier this season.
