11th seed Alex de Minaur has a tricky opening round match in the Monte Carlo Masters. The Australian is up against wild card and former champion Stan Wawrinka. In round two of this outdoor clay court tournament, the winner will take on either Dominik Koepfer or Tallon Griekspoor, both of whom are unseeded. De Minaur is 11th in the live rankings and fifth in the ATP Race. He’s so high because of his strong form on hard courts with one title won this year and another final reached. A good run in this Masters 1000 tournament would boost his ranking even further but he’s not as successful on this surface. He’s never made it past round two either here or at Roland Garros but has got to the third round in both Madrid and Rome.

Stan Wawrinka won this title ten years ago and the French Open in 2015. He’s 78th in the live rankings and has had an inconsistent year on both hard courts and clay.  That explains why he's only 238th in the Live ATP Race at the time of writing this article on Sunday April 7. The Swiss player lost in round two in Marrakech last week. Before that he only reached the second round in Buenos Aires and fell at the first hurdle in Rio.
