Chelsea Women host Barcelona Women in the second leg of the Women’s UEFA Champions League semi-final on Saturday. Emma Hayes’ English Champions stunned the European Champions in the first leg with a 1-0 win in Spain. Erin Cuthbert scored the all-important goal to give Chelsea a slight advantage in the second leg. It was the first time that Chelsea had beat the Spaniards in four attempts, losing twice and drawing once previously. The English side had the entire week to prepare for the second leg which will be held at Stamford Bridge. The win meant Chelsea remain unbeaten in the Champions League this season, with six wins and three draws from their nine games in the competition so far. The winner of this tie will then go on to face either Paris St Germain or Lyon in the final of the tournament. That game is scheduled to take place at the San Mames stadium in Bilbao on the 25th May. 

Barcelona Women’s complete dominance of their domestic league has often translated into excellent performances in Europe in recent times. However, last time out the current Champions of Europe struggled on home soil and went down to a rare defeat. That will certainly have been a jolt to the system for Jonatan Giraldez’s team. The Champions will have to do something that they have not done previously in this competition. Come back from a first leg deficit and turn the tie around. They have lost semi-final ties, but they have been in the second leg, usually after a big win for Barcelona on home soil. This promises to be a hugely exciting second leg, played in front of a full house at Stamford Bridge.
