Different tennis betting markets

Outright betting markets (1X2): The most popular of all tennis betting markets is also the simplest to understand! Outright markets are simply betting on which player you think is going to win the match. As with all sports bets, the bookmakers will assess the two players and set the betting line accordingly. There are situations that can occur in tennis betting where it is important to know the specifics of the outright betting market. For example, if a player retires from the match due to injury, your bet will be void.

Handicap (spread) betting markets: Similar to a point spread in other sports, the handicap market can be played on either games won or sets won. For example, a WTA match will usually see a set spread of -1.5, meaning the favorite will have to win in straight sets 2-0 to cover while the underdog just has to win a set to cover. The handicap on games is a similar concept except all of the individual games are totaled up at the end of the match to determine the winner of the bet. (Read more about handicap betting: What is handicap betting?)

Over/under betting market: This market can also be placed on either sets or games. Betting over 2.5 sets on a best-of-three match is simply betting that one of the players will not win in straight sets. Games are similar; if you studied a contest and have come to the conclusion that it is an even matchup, betting the over on games could be a good approach. Conversely, if there is a clear mismatch between two players, the under might be the more prudent choice as the match is likely going to finish in straight sets. (Read more about the over/under market: What is Over and Under Market in Sports Betting?)

Futures markets: Another hugely popular betting market in tennis is the futures betting market. This involves betting, usually before the tournament begins, on which player you think will win the competition. It’s also important to note that these types of bets can often also be made during the competition, usually between rounds. This allows for some interesting situations amongst punters where you are able to “invest” in different players depending on form, matchups, path to the final, etc.

The most popular tennis competitions to bet on worldwide

Australian Open

The first major in the calendar year, the Australian Open is played in Melbourne and takes place in the middle of January. The tournament is known for its hard courts which causes the ball to travel faster, making for a higher pace, frenetic type of play. Novak Djokovic is the current men's champion, securing a record 10th title in the competition, while Aryna Sabalenka is the current women’s Australian Open champion.

Roland Garros (French Open)

Next up in the calendar year is the French Open which takes place in Paris and starts at the end of May. Roland-Garros is famous for its clay courts which cause the ball to travel slower. Some players, such as the legendary Rafael Nadal, have adapted their game perfectly to the surface which gives them a significant leg-up on the competition. Nadal holds the record with 14 French Open championships and the Spaniard has lifted La Coupe des Mousquetaires five of the last six years. The women’s champion is Iga Swiatek.

Wimbledon

Widely considered to be the most prestigious of the majors and the oldest in existence, Wimbledon is more than just a tennis tournament – It’s a look into historic British traditions and culture. The competition is the only major to still be played on grass and players must adhere to a dress code of almost entirely white attire. Wimbledon also holds the record for the longest match at 11 hours and five minutes between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut, spanned over the course of three days. The tournament takes place in London and begins in the beginning of July. The current champions are Novak Djokovic, his fourth in a row, and Elena Rybakina on the ladies’ side.

US Open

The final major of the calendar year is the US Open. Taking place in Queens, New York, the US Open is the only of the four majors to be played at night. This gives the tournament a unique feel, as there is a real primetime atmosphere with the players competing under the bright lights in the Big Apple. Similar to the Australian Open, the US Open is played on hard courts. The tournament starts at the end of August. The current men’s champion is Carlos Alcaraz and the women’s champion is Iga Swiatek.
