Manchester City vs Brighton: Carabao Cup Clash Sets Up Etihad Double Header

Back-to-Back Meetings in the Space of Four Days
The first of two encounters between Manchester City and Brighton this week kicks off at the Etihad tonight in the Carabao Cup, with the Premier League rematch following on Saturday. That quick turnaround is likely to shape team selection from both sides, and the managers face a real test of squad depth.
City swept through the third round by beating Norwich 5-0 in September, a match in which Maresca used several fringe players. He made eight changes for the Champions League win over AEK Athens on October 20, and a similar approach is expected here.
Haaland was rested for that European match, and Maresca may choose to keep his top scorer fresh for the weekend league fixture.
Brighton, meanwhile, reached the fourth round through a 3-2 comeback win at Manchester United in September. Charalampos Kostoulas, the 19-year-old Greek forward, was among the scorers at Old Trafford, continuing a strong start to life at the club after his summer move from Olympiacos.
Hurzeler will also think about Saturday's trip back to the Etihad and could hand minutes to players on the fringes.
League Form Points to a Close Contest
In the Premier League, these two clubs sit first and third respectively. City have 21 points from eight matches after winning their opening seven games before a 2-1 loss at Aston Villa in Gameweek 8, where Nicolas Jackson scored twice.
Brighton have 16 points, lifted by a 5-0 rout of Crystal Palace and a 3-0 home win over Arsenal, but dropped their own points at Liverpool last weekend. In truth, the Seagulls's attacking numbers have been striking:
- With 23 league goals in eight matches, they are the top scorers in the Premier League.
- Their goal difference of +16 is the best in the division, five better than City's +11.
- Pascal Gross leads their creative output with three goals and four assists from midfield,
- While Kostoulas already has three league strikes alongside his cup goal.
On the other hand, City's firepower centres on Erling Haaland, who has nine Premier League goals this term. Rayan Cherki has added four, and Phil Foden scored a Champions League hat-trick in the 5-1 thrashing of AEK Athens just eight days ago.
Depth across the squad means Maresca can rotate without losing much quality.
Maresca Expects to Make Changes
Maresca used 26 different players across City's opening eight league matches and three Champions League fixtures, and he is expected to shuffle his pack again tonight.
Floyd Samba, Allan, Ryan McAidoo, Vitor Reis and Kaden Braithwaite all made their Champions League debuts against AEK Athens, and some of those younger players could feature.
But Antoine Semenyo remains sidelined with a knee injury sustained in mid-October.
Nico O'Reilly (back) and Matheus Nunes are both doubtful and may be saved for Saturday.
Brighton could welcome Yankuba Minteh back into the squad after a calf problem kept him out since the opening weekend. But the Conference League schedule, with trips to Getafe and Panathinaikos still to come, means Hurzeler will want to keep legs fresh.
Previous Meetings Suggest a Tight Affair
City and Brighton drew 1-1 at the Etihad in January in the Premier League, with Haaland's penalty cancelled out by Kaoru Mitoma.
In the 2025-26 campaign, however, Brighton won 2-1 at home in the first meeting before that draw. Going back further, City dominated the 2023-24 fixtures with a 2-1 home win and a 4-0 away victory.
The Carabao Cup throws up different dynamics, with altered lineups and fresh legs for squad players eager to impress.
Notably, City's home form has been strong this season, winning all four Premier League matches at the Etihad, but cup football has a habit of producing surprises.
