Fleetwood Town vs Arsenal: The Cod Army Dare to Dream of a Carabao Cup Miracle
by Thobelani Moyo | by Cydias Aujard
Can Fleetwood Town overcome the mountainous task ahead of them?
Fleetwood Town have not been at their best in the 2026-27 League Two campaign with just three wins from 13 games. The Lancashire-based outfit have no choice but to turn their attention to the EFL Cup to restore their confidence.
The Cod Army are competing in the third round of this competition for the first time in club history. It has been a terrific run, with the team securing wins over fellow League Two opponents Chesterfield and Shrewsbury Town before upsetting Championship side Sheffield United in the second round with a 1-0 home victory.
Fleetwood Town's success in the EFL Cup has been built on their organised defense that has kept three clean sheets. Keeping another clean sheet would allow them to match Tranmere Rovers' achievement from the 1988-89 campaign, a record that has stood among fourth-tier teams ever since.
Head coach Matt Lawlor and company now have their eyes on a bigger prize: slaying the giant. Arsenal present a tough challenge but the minnows will be determined to rewrite the script and make this a night to remember.
First, they must overcome a major hurdle: their underwhelming record against Premier League opposition in the EFL Cup. So far, they've met three different teams in this category. None of their encounters against these teams resulted in victory.
Fleetwood record against Premier League clubs in the EFL Cup:
- Matches played: 5
- Wins: 0
- Draws: 1
- Losses: 4
Home advantage could play a big role in this clash, as this is where they've turned out to be a formidable opponent. Fleetwood have played ten matches, and only fellow League Two side Rochdale has managed to beat them this season. Another point worth mentioning is that they've avoided defeat in their last three matches, recording two wins and a solitary draw.
33-Years without silverware! Can the Gunners go the extra-mile this time around?

Manchester City's blunder in their match against Aston Villa in the Premier League was definitely good news for Arsenal, who capitalised on that by securing a 2-0 home win over Everton. That outcome has brought them level on points with Enzo Maresca's City at the top of the table.
The Gunners are out to build on that momentum and see off a Fleetwood Town side in the EFL Cup. This competition has been their playground, but it has been long since they won here. You will have to go back to 1992-93 for their last triumph. It was their second silverware after a six-year wait.
Since then, Mikel Arteta's charges have become accustomed to finishing as runners-up, doing so seven times. Their latest was in the previous edition, losing to rivals Man City in the final. The objective is simple this time around: go one step further and lift the trophy.
A 4-2 away thrashing of Ipswich Town in the second round currently sees them at this stage of the competition. Progression to the next round is imminent, as highlighted in our Fleetwood vs Arsenal prediction.
This is not their first rodeo when it comes to facing fourth-tier sides in the third round. They have done so in nine previous meetings and have suffered just one defeat while progressing from the remaining eight. Their record in this competition sounds even better having won 13 of their last 18 matches (D4, L1). The only team to beat them was Wigan in January 2006, losing 1-0.
