image 5 Things you need to know about the 4 English teams in the Champions League
Here we present a few facts and stats that highlight some significant parts of the 5 English teams’ storylines in this year’s UEFA Champions League, as they all enter their last game of the group stage. None have had easy tasks in their groups.

Neither have they made it easy on themselves, tripping up frequently. Some hang by a thread, others are all but through. A few will already be looking to the knockout phase while others must be fully concentrated on the and final game of the world’s most prestigious club tournament.

VfL Wolfsburg v Man Utd

1. Reasons to support Wolfsburg

  • Wolfsburg just need the solitary point to top Group B
  • They have won both of their home games this campaign
  • United have not won away from home

2. Reasons to support Man Utd

  • Man United have been solid at the back recently. Vardy’s goal (vs Leicester) was the first they have conceded from open play in the BPL in 545 minutes
  • In 4 of their 5 UCL encounters, LVG’s side have obtained over 65% possession
  • United have had a 50% shot accuracy so far in the competition

3. Bas Dost vs Anthony Martial

Wolfsburg vs Manchester United

Anthony Martial, the young French international, has had a mixed 2015/16 for Man United. After bursting out of the blocks for the Red Devils his end-product has been dampened somewhat. In their last UCL game, the Frenchman was lively for a period, forcing the PSV goalkeeper into two good saves. Like Martial, Bas Dost has just the one goal in the tournament for Wolfsburg. The Dutchman does however have 7 in the Bundesliga.

4. First meeting

Worryingly for United fans, Wolfsburg were able to open their defence up within 4 minutes thanks to a slick 6 pass move that lead to the goal. Since that first encounter LVG has produced an improved defensive line while David De Gea has been making his expected excellent saves. United were able to get the win at Old Trafford against Dieter Hecking’s men. After conceding the goal they took it to the German side. Mata scored from the spot after Wolfsburg’s scorer, Caligiuri, handballed in the area. The Spaniard sumptuously set up Chris Smalling for the winner early in the 2nd half, before the Red Devils experienced a nervy end to the game. It ended 2-1 to United.

Man City v B M'gladbach

1. Reasons to support Man City

  • City had 65% possession of the ball. 36% of the game was played in the German side’s half.
  • Aguero had 8 shots in the last game. More than any other player on the pitch.
  • City have scored in all of their games except the last (vsJuventus). They have failed to score In only 2 of their last 12 games in the UCL.

2. Reasons to support B M'gladbach

  • Borussia Monchengladbach were a surprise for many City fans but not for fans of the Bundesliga. They are unbeaten since their loss to City in all competitions (11 games)
  • Fabian Johnson has 3 goals in his last 2. Stindl and Raffael both have 2 in 2 in all competitions. Attacking players finding form
  • City have not kept a clean sheet this campaign. They have kept just 4 in 33. Andre Schubert’s side will be confident they can score at the Etihad

3. Sergio Aguero vs Raffael Caetano de Araújo

Manchester City M'gladbach

Both Sergio Aguero and Raffael have scored the sole goal in this year’s tournament.

4. First meeting

Aguero saved his team by scoring his 90th minute penalty against Monchengladbach in their first clash. In fact the Citizens had to come back from being 1-0 due to a Lars Stindl early in the second half. Noteworthy is the fact that Joe Hart saved Raffael’s penalty in the first half. Hart was in imperious form for this game. Significantly captain Vincent Kompany was not present. Evidently when the Belgian is not playing at centre-back, City look a lot shakier.

Chelsea - Porto

1. Reasons to support Chelsea

  • Chelsea have won all 5 home games against Portuguese opponents in the competition
  • Shockingly Porto lost at to Dynamo Kiev last time out (2-0)
  • Maicon is a doubt for Porto, a big blow for the Portuguese side

2. Reasons to support Porto

  • Before their loss to Dynamo Kiev, Porto had scored at least 2 goals in all of their group games.
  • Porto have lost just 3 of their last 14 European away games
  • Porto were not beaten away from home last year in the group stage

3. Willian vs V. Aboubakar

Chelsea vs Porto

Chelsea’s winger Willian has a great return of 4 goals in the Champions League so far. This season the Brazilian international has probably Chelsea’s stand-out player, if not for the failures of his teammates then certainly for his excellent free-kicks. Porto’s Aboubakar has socred three goal in the tournament, all within the area.

4. First meeting

Chelsea came away with no points in the teams’ first game as Porto won 2-1 at the Estadio do Dragao. Willian got the equalizer from a well-placed free kick for the Blues but that could not cancel out goals from Andre Andre and Maicon. It was problems at the back that let Mourinho’s side down. AsmirBegovic was made to work with a flimy defensive line at times.

Olympiakos v Arsenal

1.Reasons to support Olympiakos

  • A draw is all Olympiakos need to go through
  • Arsenal need to win by 2 goals as a minimum
  • Olympiakos won all of their home games last season

2.Reasons to support Arsenal

  • Arsenal won all of their away games last season bar one in the Champions League
  • Olympiakos have lost a third of their fixtures at home in the competition against English sides
  • In the last round of games Arsenal battered Dinamo Zagreb (3-0) whilst Olympiakos were well beaten by Bayern Munich (4-0). This will give confidence to Wenger and his team’s fans.

3. A. Sánchezvs vs B. Ideye

Arsenal Olympiakos

In 5 appearances Alexis Sanchez has a respectable 3 goals to his name in this season’s tournament. Additionally he has created 12 chances. The Chilean has one an impressive 70% of duels. In the same amount of appearances in the competition Ideye Brown has just the one goal.

4. First meeting

The first meeting produced something completely unpredictable. Olympiakos were victors at the Emirates (3-2). Pardo scored the first for the Greeks. 3 minutes later Walcott got one back>ospinathen scored an own goal with a howler. Sanchez equalized one minute later for Wenger’s side before they gave away a cheap counter-attacking goal. Too much was blamed on the Colombian goalie for the loss, defensive frailties caused the Gunners to lose.
