NPFL Announces 2026-27 Season Kickoff in Late August
The Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) has officially confirmed the calendar for the upcoming 2026-27 domestic season, as well as provided an expected timeline for the Presidential Federation Cup. Check out our NPFL predictions.
The 2026-27 NPFL season will start over the weekend of August 28 to 30!
By providing almost two full months' notice, the schedule is aimed at providing clubs, players, officials, match broadcasters, and other stakeholders with sufficient time to prepare and a clear roadmap of how the upcoming campaign will unfold.
At the time of writing, the mid-season break has been set for December 3 to January 27, 2027. After a further four rounds of league action in January, state Playoffs for the Presidential Cup will commence on February 7 and run alongside the league fixtures.
Notably, four newly promoted sides will inject fresh energy into the upcoming campaign following the conclusion of the 2025-26 Nigerian National League season (NNL), with Sporting Lagos, Inter Lagos, Ranchers Bees, and Doma United set to join the top flight.

Record-Breaking Prize Fund Confirmed for 2026-27 Season
The undisputed highlight of the stakeholders’ meeting came from National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman Shehu Dikko, who announced that the 2026-27 NPFL champions will pocket a record-breaking ₦1 billion at the end of the next campaign.
This represents the most lucrative championship payout in the history of Nigerian club football!
Nigeria’s football authorities are believed to be using the historic reward to supercharge the league’s marketability, elevate domestic competition, and attract fresh investment in football in the country. Dikko said:
“We are committed to transforming the NPFL into a truly professional and financially viable league. This prize money reflects our ambition to reward excellence and attract the kind of investment that will propel Nigerian football to new heights.”
Defending champions Enugu Rangers headline the upcoming campaign after securing their ninth domestic crown at the close of the 2025-26 season. The Flying Antelopes head into the new term targeting back-to-back titles to achieve a historic milestone of 10 NPFL crowns.
