Data visualization: the types of bets to try during the World Cup

A World Cup always attracts a large number of bettors. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced bettor, always remember to base your bets on statistics before placing them.
These key figures from the last two tournaments can be found in more detail on our 2026 World Cup predictions page.
Over/Under: which bets should you go for?
Although the average number of goals was 2.66 across the last two World Cups, the “Over 2.5” bet has not come in more than half the time (only 48%). It therefore remains a fairly uncertain bet, unlike the “Over 1.5”, which has been successful in almost three out of four matches (74%).
The “Over 3.5” bet has come in just under one in four matches (22%). Whilst these figures are not set in stone, it is also worth noting the new World Cup format, which will feature more matches and include teams of a lower standard on paper.
The figures we have just given you could therefore be revised upwards, particularly during the group stage when the big nations face the minnows (Panama vs England, New Zealand vs Belgium, Brazil vs Haiti or Germany vs Curaçao, for example).
Focus on the second half when betting on goals
This is a statistic found in most football leagues: the second half is often more goal-heavy than the first. If you enjoy betting on goals, you should therefore focus on the second half when placing your bets.
For example, we can see that, across the last two World Cups, 24% of goals – almost a quarter – were scored in the final quarter of an hour (76–90+). It’s worth noting that, following the same logic, 59% of goals are scored in the second half!
Which correct score should you favour?
Of the 128 matches analysed during the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, the most common correct score is 2-1 (or 1-2): it accounts for 12% of matches!
If you want to try your hand at exact scores and take advantage of the high odds on these bets during the 2026 World Cup, the scenario involving 3 goals in a match and a 1-goal margin therefore seems to be the one to go for to maximise your winning bets.
