Third seed Jasmine Paolini will take on the unseeded Yuan Yue to begin her 2024 Wuhan Open campaign. They will battle in the second round with the winner next playing Erika Andreeva, Mirra Andreeva or Wang Xiyu. Let’s look at a prediction for this match.

Yue had to come from a set down to win her first-round tie against lucky loser Clara Burel. The win ended a two-match skid and also highlighted how rocky she has been this season.

Yue is having a topsy-turvy year and so far has won just four more matches than the 23 she has lost. Despite the dip, she won a title in Austin as well as recording a semi-final run in Hobart.

The Chinese number two, who has dropped to 45th in the live ranking, also reached the Indian Wells quarter-finals.

Jasmine Paolini had a disappointing early exit in Beijing. Though she did win the Doubles event, the Italian lost in her second match at the China Open. She will be eager to regain the form that has seen her blast her way into the WTA top 10.

Currently placed sixth in the world, Paolini has been one of the in-form players this season. She has compiled a 37-17 record and is just three wins from a second successive year of claiming at least 40 wins.

This form earned her a title in Dubai and two runner-up finishes at Wimbledon and Roland Garros. Paolini has also not lost her opening round tie in six of the eight WTA 1000 tournaments she has participated in this year.

Having the upper hand against Yue, she will be confident of another winning start. Paolini defeated Yue in their only matchup so far at last year’s China Open.
