Volleyball Nations League prediction: who will win the 2026 edition?

Held every summer, the Volleyball Nations League is one of the most eagerly awaited events on the international volleyball calendar and a major focus for sports bettors and sports predictions enthusiasts. Team lineups can vary significantly from week to week, as coaches often rotate their squads and give younger players valuable experience. Despite these changes, the strongest nations usually emerge when it matters most.
Defending champions Poland will once again be among the leading contenders in 2026, alongside Italy, the reigning world champions. These two volleyball powerhouses are expected to be at the forefront of the title race, although several other teams have the quality to challenge them.
France, winners of the last two Olympic gold medals, enter a new era following the international retirements of several key players, including Benjamin Toniutti, Kevin Tillie, Earvin Ngapeth, and Nicolas Le Goff. While the French squad remains highly talented, its younger core may need time to develop the experience required to compete consistently at the highest level.
Bulgaria will be another team worth keeping an eye on after their surprising run to the World Championship final in 2025. Powered by the talented Nikolov brothers, Simeon and Aleksandar, the Bulgarians will be eager to build on that success. The Nations League will also serve as valuable preparation ahead of the European Championship, which Bulgaria will co-host alongside Italy later in the year.
Meanwhile, nations such as Slovenia, Brazil, and Japan will also be aiming for a place in the Final 8 and could prove dangerous throughout the tournament.
The 2026 Volleyball Nations League promises to deliver fierce competition, with several European teams expected to play leading roles in the race for the title. Based on their recent World Championship triumph and the depth of talent throughout their roster, Italy stands out as our pre-tournament favourite. Led by star outside hitter Alessandro Michieletto, who was named MVP of the latest World Championship, the Azzurri appear well-equipped to challenge for another major international trophy.

2026 Volleyball Nations League medals prediction: who's the favorite for gold, silver and bronze?

Already stipulated just above, Poland and Italy are the two big favorites of this VNL 2026. The two teams have on paper the two best teams and after clashing in last year’s final of the Nations League (success by Poland) as well as in the semi-finals of the World Championships (victory of the Italy), the two nations are expected to meet again in China during the final phase, probably in the finals.
To complete the podium, several teams will be able to claim this 3rd place, notably with the team of France. With a revamped but very strong squad, Les Bleus can have great ambitions in this VNL. If victory seems difficult to achieve, a place on the podium is possible in view of the players who will be present.
Italy, Poland, France, a trio that has stood out and shared continental and world titles in recent years, and could be on the podium at this 2026 Nations League
Volleyball Nations League: our predictions for the first phase
With 18 teams present in this VNL 2026 and only 8 who will be qualified for the quarterfinals that will take place in China, the fight promises to be intense throughout this first phase.
To help you, here is our forecast of the 8 teams that will participate in the Final 8 of the Nations League. China, the organiser of the final phase, will automatically qualify.
Our prediction on the 8 teams that qualify for the final phase:
- China (host country for the elimination phase)
- Poland
- Italy
- Bulgaria
- France
- Slovenia
- Brazil
- Japan
Holding the title, Poland will logically be one of the big favourites in the competition, along with Italy, world champions last September. As a team in full progression, Bulgaria should be able to join the fight for a place in the Final 8, just like France’s team in reconstruction. Slovenia and Brazil are still well equipped to reach the quarterfinals, as is Japan, which has been there in recent years.
Beginner bettors - how does the Nations League work?
Now that we've outlined our favourites for the title and podium places, it's important to understand how the 2026 Volleyball Nations League is structured.
A total of 18 national teams from across the globe will compete in this year's VNL: Japan, Argentina, Poland, Bulgaria, China, the United States, Brazil, Germany, Cuba, Italy, France, Serbia, Belgium, Slovenia, Canada, Ukraine, Türkiye, and Iran.
During the preliminary phase, each team will play 12 matches across three competition weeks held in June and July at venues around the world. Once all matches have been completed, the top eight teams in the standings will qualify for the Final 8, which will take place in Ningbo, China, from 29 July to 2 August.
As the host nation of the Finals, China is guaranteed a place in the Final 8. Should the Chinese team fail to finish among the top eight teams in the standings, it will still qualify automatically, replacing the lowest-ranked team that would otherwise have advanced.
In volleyball, a team must win three sets to claim victory in a match. A set is won by being the first team to reach 25 points while maintaining at least a two-point advantage. If the match reaches a deciding fifth set, the tie-break is played to 15 points, again with a minimum two-point margin required to win.
For the 2026 Volleyball Nations League, teams can earn points according to the following system:
- 3 points: victory 3/0 or 3/1
- 2 points: 3/2 win
- 1 point: defeat 2/3
- 0 points: defeat 0/3 or 1/3
At the end of the first phase, the 8 best teams will head to China for the Final 8 with the quarter-finals, respecting the ranking of the first phase: 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6 and 4 vs 5. Then come the semi-finals and the finals.
You now know the principle of this 2026 Nations League and how it works. You are now ready to make your volleyball predictions during these two months of competition.
To remember about the organization of the Nations League for your pronos on volleyball

How to make good predictions on the Nations League matches and bet on Volleyball?

With our tournament predictions and overview of the competition format, you now have everything you need to approach betting on the 2026 Volleyball Nations League with confidence. To help you make more informed decisions throughout the tournament, we've also put together a series of betting tips that can improve your chances of success over the coming weeks.
By applying these recommendations consistently, you'll be better equipped to identify value opportunities and maximize your chances of making profitable volleyball predictions throughout the 2026 VNL.
Monitor team form closely
One of the most important factors to consider before placing any volleyball bet is the current form and overall level of the teams involved.
With each nation playing 12 matches across three separate competition weeks, momentum can shift quickly. Teams are likely to experience both strong runs and difficult periods, creating opportunities for bettors who stay up to date with recent performances.
Before making your predictions, review each team's results in major international competitions over the past few years, as well as their performances during the current Nations League campaign. For example, a team coming into a match after three consecutive defeats may be lacking confidence, which could significantly impact its chances of success.
When it comes to the Final 8 in China, it is also essential to analyse how teams performed during the preliminary phase and which players were involved. Results alone do not always tell the full story, especially in a competition where squad rotation plays such an important role.
Check team rosters before every competition week

One of the most important factors to consider when making Volleyball Nations League predictions is squad rotation.
Following a long and demanding club season, national team coaches carefully manage player workloads throughout the tournament. As a result, many of the world's top players are rested during certain matches or competition weeks, while younger athletes are given opportunities to gain international experience.
Before placing your bets, take the time to review the latest squad lists and expected lineups. Understanding which players are available can provide a much clearer picture of a team's true strength and help you identify betting opportunities that may be overlooked by the market.
Home support can also play a significant role during the Volleyball Nations League, especially for nations hosting one of the competition weeks.
The 2026 VNL will be held across the following host countries:
- Week 1: Turkey, China, and Canada
- Week 2: Slovenia, France, and Poland
- Week 3: Serbia, United States, and Japan
Host nations often take these events very seriously and are more likely to field their strongest available squads in front of home fans. This can provide a valuable edge and is an important factor to consider when evaluating match outcomes.
For that reason, always pay close attention to the teams playing on home soil during each competition week.
Understand what's at stake
With 18 teams competing and only eight places available in the Final 8, every match carries significant importance.
As the preliminary phase progresses, the pressure will increase for teams battling for qualification, while others may see their hopes of reaching the Finals fade. At the other end of the standings, the fight to avoid relegation will become increasingly intense, as the lowest-ranked team at the end of the competition will lose its place in next year's edition.
By regularly analysing the standings and recent results, you can better understand the motivation and objectives of each team. This context is often crucial when making accurate volleyball predictions, particularly during the final week of the preliminary phase, when some teams may have everything to play for while others have little left at stake.
Once the tournament reaches the knockout stage, the situation becomes even clearer. Every match in the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final is win-or-go-home, with a place in the next round, or the championship trophy itself, on the line. These high-pressure encounters often produce some of the most competitive and unpredictable matches of the entire Volleyball Nations League.
Find the best odds for your volleyball bet

This may sound like a basic piece of advice, but it remains one of the most important principles for successful sports betting: always compare the odds offered by different bookmakers.
Odds can vary significantly from one betting site to another, even for the exact same match. Over the course of a tournament as long as the Volleyball Nations League, consistently securing the best available price can make a real difference to your overall returns.
For this reason, many experienced bettors maintain accounts with multiple sportsbooks, allowing them to shop around for the most competitive odds before placing a wager.
An additional benefit is that many bookmakers offer attractive welcome bonuses and promotional offers to new customers. Taking advantage of these offers can provide extra value throughout the tournament.
Diversify your Volleyball bets
While we have already shared our favourites to win the 2026 Volleyball Nations League, outright winner bets are only one of many betting opportunities available during the competition.
In some matches, backing the favourite to win may offer limited value due to low odds. In these situations, exploring alternative betting markets can often be a more profitable strategy.
Throughout the 2026 VNL, bettors will have access to a wide range of betting options, including:
- Total number of sets played (3, 4, or 5)
- Total points scored in a set or match
- Correct match score (3-0, 3-1, or 3-2)
- Winner of individual sets (first set, second set, etc.)
- Point handicaps and winning margins within a set
By considering different markets rather than focusing exclusively on match winners, you can uncover additional value and tailor your betting strategy to specific match situations.
With so many betting opportunities available throughout the Volleyball Nations League, there should be no shortage of options to suit your preferred approach.
Common mistakes to avoid when betting on the Volleyball Nations League
Following the right betting strategies is important, but avoiding common mistakes can be just as valuable.
Successful volleyball betting is not only about identifying winning opportunities; it is also about managing risk, staying disciplined, and avoiding decisions that can negatively impact your long-term results.
Below are some of the most common pitfalls bettors should avoid when making Volleyball Nations League predictions and wagers throughout the tournament.
- Don’t just bet on your favorite team
- Avoid making your bet without having analyzed the match
- Bet live without knowing the teams
- Placing a bet that is too high
- Not knowing the stakes of the game
- Combine too many bets
If you follow all these tips when betting on the 2026 Nations League, then you will increase your chances of winning not only during the competition, but also in all the other sports on which you will make your bets.
