Tomas Machac has been outstanding throughout the opening week in New York and will arrive for this match confident of earning passage to the quarter-finals. The Czech athlete is yet to lose a set after three rounds of play.

He hasn't faced a player of the calibre of Fritz yet. Of the three players he has played, only one is ranked inside the top 50. Machac defeated the qualifier and world number 143 Ugo Blanchet in the last round. Advancing to this round has moved Machac to 21st in the live ranking.

Taylor Fritz has never lost against Machac. He won their first-ever meeting five years ago at the French Open in five sets. Their most recent showdown at this year’s United Cup saw Fritz win after Machac was forced into retirement due to injury.

The American hasn’t dominated at Flushing Meadows, where he is seeking to make at least the final once again. Fritz, last year’s finalist here, has lost a set in both of his last two matches.
