The 18th edition of the Portuguese League Cup will be decided on Saturday as Sporting Lisbon face off against Benfica at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria. We’ve got a prediction on the winner in this Lisbon derby match between the Leões and the Águias!
A new champion will be crowned following 2023/24 winners Braga’s elimination in the semi-final at the hands of Benfica. For Sporting, they come into this cup final seeking their fifth League Cup title all-time and their first since the 2021/22 season.
Following a brief wobble which saw the reigning league champions lose four matches in a row after former manager Ruben Amorim departed for Manchester United, Sporting have since recovered their form. They’re now on a six-match unbeaten run across all competitions, winning four.
Sporting’s last outing saw them prevail 1-0 over rivals Porto in their semi-final fixture in this competition on Tuesday.
Benfica are leading the record books with seven prior triumphs in this competition. However, they are on an eight-year drought with their last League Cup title coming in 2016.
Benfica were able to put an end to a two-match losing streak in the semi-final with their 3-0 win over Braga. They cruised to victory, grabbing three goals in the first half to ultimately wrap up a comfortable win.

Our Sporting Lisbon vs Benfica Lisbon Prediction
These two teams faced off at the end of December with Sporting securing a 1-0 home victory. That could wind up being a pivotal result, as it will give the Sporting players plenty of confidence and was the first match under current manager Rui Borges.
Borges has now been in charge of three matches and gained two wins over Sporting’s two biggest rivals. Sporting have had Benfica’s number in recent clashes and we expect to see that trend continue in Leiria on Saturday. Our Sporting Lisbon vs Benfica prediction: Sporting to lift the trophy.
