South Africa will look to win against Nicaragua on Friday in an international friendly before setting off to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This match at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg between the ‘Bafana Bafana’ and the ‘Blue and White’ is likely to follow the home team’s recent trend of goals, so our prediction is for more than 2.5 goals to be scored.
The hosts are preparing for their first appearance at a World Cup since 2010, an edition they hosted. This is the last match for the Bafana Bafana before selecting the team, so all eyes will be on the performances and how they can lift the morale with a win here.
Nicaragua finished bottom of their group in the World Cup qualification and have no hopes of upsetting their fancied African hosts. That said, with a new manager in charge, the tiny Central American nation can push South Africa hard. Will goals fly, or is there frustration in store for the home team? South Africa - Nicaragua: Form Analysis
South Africa qualified for their first World Cup since 2010 by topping their qualification group with 18 points (W5, D3, L2). It was a tough group with the top three teams separated by just one point and only the final matchday deciding the order.
The hosts have a lot to improve, though, as the results have been poor. South Africa lost in the last 16 stage of the Africa Cup of Nations and have also failed to win their last two friendlies played in March (D1, L1).
South Africa won four of their last seven home games.
Nicaragua finished bottom of Group C in the CONCACAF World Cup qualification, with just one win from their six matches (W1, D1, L4). That win came over Honduras (2-0), which in a way decided the group, as Haiti overcame Honduras by two points to qualify for the World Cup.
The departure of Marco Fugueroa leaves Juan Cruz as the new coach, with the incoming manager hoping to test their mettle against World Cup opposition.

South Africa & Nicaragua Squad Analysis
South Africa will take into account the fact that Mamelodi Sundowns were playing until last weekend. That puts the likes of Ronwen Williams, Khuliso Mudau, and Jayden Adams, among others, likely to be rested here. This is the last game before they announce the World Cup squad, so the likes of Sphephelo Sithole and Thalente Mbatha could be pushing for a start.
The hosts are set to go in with their traditional 4-2-3-1 system, which could see Iqraam Rayners line up as the striker. However, there’s Lyle Foster of Burnley also in the squad and pushing for a start.
Foster has seen his last five national goals come in wins for South Africa.
Nicaragua are expected to make a number of changes, with new coach Cruz Real naming a squad that has a number of young and inexperienced players.
The ‘Blue and White’ have usually played in a 5-4-1 formation with the midfield stacked up to frustrate teams. It could be interesting to see if Edgar Castillo – ten goals and six assists in club football this season – gets his second cap.

Our South Africa vs Nicaragua Prediction
South Africa are looking to use this friendly to finetune their preparations for the upcoming World Cup. This being their first appearance on the global stage since 2010, the Bafana Bafana are likely to put emphasis on finding form. Nicaragua are looking only for an upset, which would be a handy result to overturn their recent poor run of form.
The South Africans are likely to miss a number of regular starters for this contest, but goals are likely to flow, going by the big gap in FIFA rankings. Our South Africa vs Nicaragua prediction is more than 2.5 goals.
South Africa vs Nicaragua Alternative Predictions
South Africa wins
South Africa may be missing a few of their regular starters, but that shouldn’t take the favourites tag away from them. Nicaragua have five losses from their last six matches, which should give hope to South Africa to return to winning ways.
