It promises to be a thriller as South Africa begin their Nations Championship campaign by playing host to England at Ellis Park Stadium on Saturday. The Springboks, coming off nine consecutive victories (seven of which by blowout margins), are clear favourites against an English side that has lost each of their last four matches, hence our prediction in favour of the hosts.
South Africa’s dominance of major world rugby competitions in recent years will be put to the test as the inaugural Nations Championship opens a new chapter of rivalry for the sport. This matchup against 29-time European champions England is a fair challenge for the reigning World Cup champions. The World No.1 will not only be aiming for a strong start to the competition on Saturday but also looking to add an 11th major rugby title to their trophy cabinet.
Meanwhile, England will look to salvage what has been a horrible start to 2026 that culminated in their worst-ever finish in the Six Nations. This will be their 22nd meeting with South Africa and the odds are firmly stacked against them given recent outcomes of those encounters. Can they roll back those setbacks for a positive result? Keep reading as we delve into further details.

South Africa - England: Form Analysis
South Africa is a team to watch in this inaugural Nations Championship. From a terrific campaign that saw them retain the Rugby Championship title in October 2025 to a clean sweep of their tour of the Northern Hemisphere a month later, the Springboks are showing no signs of slowing down soon. They thrashed the Barbarians 80–31 in their preparatory match for this tournament.
Overall, the four-time Rugby World Cup champions have put together an impressive 35 wins across their last 40 matches dating back to 2023. This includes victories in their last nine matches, seven of which by heavy margins.
South Africa have won four of their last five meetings with England
England are on their toughest stretch in recent months and will have to punch above their weight for a positive result in Saturday's clash. They lost their last four matches in the 2026 Six Nations, marking their worst-ever outing in the tournament. This includes a 48–46 defeat to France in their last match.
Moreover, Steve Borthwick’s side haven’t impressed in their recent away matches. They head into this clash on three consecutive defeats on the road and have lost each of their last three encounters with South Africa.
