Portugal vs Switzerland Predictions & Betting Tips (World Cup)
by Joseph |
The round of 16 in the 2022 FIFA World Cup sees an intriguing matchup when Portugal take on Switzerland at the Lusail Iconic Stadium for this 7 PM GMT kick off. Portugal have only made the quarter finals of the World Cup once since 2002; coming in Germany 2006 when they finished fourth. Since then, they’ve suffered a round of 16 exit on two occasions while failing to even make it out of the group stage in 2014. They come up against a Switzerland side that has had a similar run over recent World Cups. The Nati are participating in their third consecutive knockout stage appearance and fourth in the last five World Cup tournaments. They have, however, failed to progress past this stage of the competition for more than 60 years, with 1954 marking the last time the Swiss have made it to the quarter finals – their best ever finish.

Form Analysis
Portugal topped Group H after winning their opening two matches and were able to hold on to the top spot despite losing 2-1 to South Korea in the final matchday. Portugal went ahead early in the fifth minute of the match but would eventually succumb to the hard-working Korean team who netted the winner in the 91st minute to secure themselves a spot in the final 16. The loss ended a solid run of three straight victories for the Portuguese but it was also their third loss in the last seven outings. A Seleção will now have to contend with a Switzerland side who they have recent history against, as the two faced off in the UEFA Nations League in the build up to the World Cup.
Switzerland should come into this match confident of getting a result as they split their two matchups in the Nations League against Portugal back in June. Switzerland would lose the first encounter 4-0 in Lisbon but would respond with a 1-0 win in Geneva. They’ve also been in good form at the World Cup so far, finishing second in a tricky Group G which also included Brazil, Cameroon and Serbia. The Nati smashed three goals past Serbia in the final matchday to secure their place and showed grit in their earlier matches as well; losing by only a one goal margin against a heavily favored Brazil and doing enough to get by Cameroon 1-0 in the opener.

Missing players

Squad analysis
Portugal manager Fernando Santos will likely be able to call upon the services of Porto midfielder Otavio, who missed the last two matches with a thigh problem after featuring in the starting 11 of the opening match against Ghana. The 68-year-old manager will have to deal without the presence of the defensive-minded Danilo Pereira after the PSG player was ruled out with broken ribs. Santos opted to rotate a number of players in the last match against South Korea, including the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva and Joao Felix, who are all expected to return to the starting 11 here.
Switzerland manager Murat Yakin will have a decision to make regarding Xherdan Shaqiri who didn’t feature at all in the second matchday against Brazil but scored an excellent goal against Serbia. The Swiss will also be sweating the availability of first-choice keeper Yann Sommer and defender Nico Elvedi, who were suffering with an illness which kept them out of the match against Serbia but could be set to return here.

Under 2.5 goals - odds : 1.66 at Vbet
Knockout round football tends to produce tight affairs and these are two teams that fit the profile for that type of match. Switzerland have seen three of their last four matches stay under 2.5 total goals while Portugal manager Fernando Santos has a reputation for pragmatic football.
Both teams to score: No - odds : 1.75 at Vbet
Seven of Portugal’s last nine matches have seen at least one team failing to score and six of Switzerland’s last nine have seen the same. That trend could continue in what is expected to be a tight matchup.
