Osaka is unbeaten this week and is on a two-match winning run. She defeated the qualifier Ariana Arseneault in straight sets in the first round and then 13th seed Liudmila Samsonova via a decider.

The four-time Grand Slam champion is having a renaissance year. She finished as runner-up in Auckland to mark her first WTA final in three years and has also won a challenger title. With 23 wins so far, Osaka has now moved up seven places to 42nd in the live ranking.

Jelena Ostapenko also needed a decider to get through her second-round tie. The Latvian, who has compiled a topsy-turvy 17-14 record, was taken the full distance by Renata Zarazua, with the match lasting almost three hours.

Though her record is far from impressive, Ostapenko has already won one title, in Stuttgart, and finished as runner-up in Doha.

A former French Open champion, the 28-year-old is now seeking to progress past the first round at this event for the first time. Ostapenko is up one spot to 25th in the live ranking.
