It is always one of the most anticipated matchups of the season when the 24-29-10 Montreal Canadiens take on the 36-19-8 Toronto Maple Leafs. Two of the original six, they have met just once this season in the opening game with the Leafs coming out on top 6-5 in a shootout. This is the first game of three at home for the Habs after four on the road which saw them take three losses, two of those via a shootout. Their one win was ending the eight-game win streak of the Nashville Predators who have been one of the top teams in recent weeks. The last time that they played at home, they beat the Arizona Coyotes 4-2 with Tanner Pearson scoring the game-winner.
The Leafs have picked up more points on the road this season than they have at home, although they were disappointing in their first game of this road trip when falling 1-4 at the Boston Bruins. Auston Matthews has just two goals in his last seven games, which is a run of poor form by his incredibly high standards, but he has absolutely ripped the Canadiens apart in his career with 44 points in 32 games against them, which includes 26 goals. He is still behind William Nylander in points this season, the 27-year-old has picked up his third straight 80-point season and should make this his first into triple figures. They had four straight wins on the road prior to the loss in Boston, looking very comfortable in front of opposing fans.
