Mirra Andreeva and Taylor Townsend, both unseeded, will meet in the first round of this year’s Madrid Open. Andreeva is back in Madrid after her exemplary performance in her debut last season. She produced a fourth-round finish and will hope for at least another similar run. Andreeva hasn’t dominated this season as she did last year when she lost just nine times in 45 matches. She has compiled an 8-5 record and has been defeated four times in her last six outings. The Russian is coming off a quarter-final exit in Rouen. Andreeva starts her campaign in Madrid having dropped four places to 47th in the live ranking.
Taylor Townsend is making her main draw Madrid debut and will hope it is one to remember. The American played here for the first time last year but was eliminated in qualifying. She is coming off a third-round finish in Charleston. This tied for her best result so far this season. Townsend has seen her form improve in recent weeks after a difficult start to the year. Seven of her 12 wins have come in her last 10 matches, with two being on clay. Townsend, who has won over 100 matches on clay in her career, starts in Madrid while placed 58th in the live ranking. The winner here will then play 29th seed Linda Noskova for a place in the third round.
