Middlesbrough and Stoke City will both target returns to winning ways when they meet in the League Cup on Tuesday. After solid starts to the season, both teams have slowed down in the last two matches. Here’s our preview and prediction for this match.
Hosts Middlesbrough are tipped favorites as they play at home. They will hope home comforts help end a four-match winless run against Stoke City. Boro are unbeaten in their last three home matches and only lost once in eight.
The last time they hosted Stoke, it ended in a 2-0 defeat but that remains their only home loss to The Potters in eight visits. Coming into this game, Tommy Conway’s stoppage time penalty saved Middlesbrough from a second straight defeat. They drew 2-2 with Portsmouth and will be desperate for a first win in three matches.
Stoke City did a double on Middlesbrough in the Championship last season with identical 2-0 wins. They will be gunning for a fifth unbeaten game against their hosts but are coming from two straight defeats.
After a 3-0 away loss at Watford, Stoke City returned home to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of West Bromwich Albion on Saturday. The last two matches were a complete contrast to their fine start when they won both matches with clean sheets.
In the first round of this competition, they beat Carlisle United 2-0 courtesy of second half goals from Freddie Anderson and Emre Tezgel. That remains their last win. Heading into this game, Stoke City have now posted six defeats in their last 11 away matches.

Our Middlesbrough vs Stoke Prediction
Middlesbrough reached the League Cup semi-finals last season and are looking to go on another good run in the competition. In the first round, they overcame a strong opponent – Leeds United – and will be unfazed by The Potters.
While they haven't been great against Stoke City lately, they’ve been dominant in this fixture at home. That, and their recent run in this competition should push them here. Stoke City are not only coming from back-to-back losses, their away form hasn’t also been great. Our prediction for Middlesbrough v Stoke City is for Middlesbrough to win.
