McCartney Kessler has made it to the semi-finals in Cleveland and will battle fifth seed Anastasia Potapova. Ahead of their Friday meeting, here’s a preview and our prediction of the match.

Kessler is having her best-ever performance at a tour event. Before arriving in Cleveland, she had never won multiple main draw matches at a tour tournament. Now she is only two wins away from a maiden tour title.

The wildcard won her last match, against Arantxa Rus, in straight sets. She dropped six games on the way to claiming her 32nd win of the season. The American, who has featured across all three WTA levels, has won three titles in the ITF and challenger circuits. She is currently up to 88th in the live ranking, a new career high.

Anastasia Potapova is more refined at tour level than Kessler and will be confident of advancing to her sixth career final. The Russian hasn’t been to a final since winning in Linz last year. A two-time tour champion, Potapova has been in sublime form in Cleveland, winning all her matches in straight sets.

It has been a huge boost after she arrived here having lost six times in seven outings. Potapova, who is yet to lose more than five games a contest, defeated Ana Bogdan in the quarter-finals. She lost just three games as she claimed her 23rd win of the season.

The 23-year-old has moved up five places in the live ranking and is now 38th in the WTA. The winner here will meet Katerina Siniakova, Clara Burel, Beatriz Haddad Maia or Peyton Sterns in the final.
