After a seven-year absence, Egypt are back in the AFCON and based on their performance in the qualifiers, there is a great likelihood that they will go the full distance. However, they will need to first get past Mali in their opening match of the tournament on Tuesday 17 January. The seven-time champions have an enthusiastic squad comprsing Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny and Roma forward Mohamed Salah. Only four players in coach Hector Cuper’s squad have played in the Cup of Nations, but they still managed to rise past African powerhouse Nigeria in the qualifiers. Mali, their first opponents in the finals, overcame competition from other strong teams Guinea and Benin to make the Gabon tournament. The Egyptians have only lost two matches in their last 12 fixtures, of which they won seven. Mali, on the other hand, lost four matches in their last 12 outings. They lost to the Senegalese U20 team in December. However, they are now joined by experienced players Bakary Sako, Modibo Maiga and Abdoulay Diaby.
