Magdalena Frech returns to Mexico seeking a better run after months of frustrations. She will be starting her quest for a second Guadalajara title with a first-round match against Nao Hibino. This will mark the third meeting between the two. At 6-3 against outside-top-100 players, our prediction here favors Frech.

The seventh seed claimed the title here in 2024 and will be looking to hit similar heights. She will also target to improve her season’s run, having recorded a 17-22 record.

The Pole has never lost a first-round match here, and in the last two editions, she reached the quarters. Frech, 59th in the live rank, reached the Merida final the last time she was in Mexico, six months ago.

Hibino will be looking to shock Frech, who has only won seven times since reaching the Merida final. A three-time tour champion, the Japanese won the duo’s only meeting on a hardcourt.

Sitting 194th in the live ranking, Hibino comes here having compiled a 26-21 record, winning 57% of her hardcourt matches. Most of those, however, were at the ITF level.

She has only played once in the main draw on tour, a first rounder in Athens, which still ended in defeat. Here in Mexico she’s beaten Sofiia Bielinska and Nadiya Kichenok to advance in the qualifiers and will hope for a deep run in her second appearance.
