Liverpool could take another step towards the Premier League title when they host a tricky matchday 27 encounter against Newcastle on Wednesday. This clash at Anfield, featuring the league-leading Reds and the fifth-placed Magpies, comes with our prediction of over 2.5 goals. Adding further intrigue, these sides will meet again in next month’s EFL Cup final.

With 64 points from 27 matches, Liverpool hold an 11-point lead over Arsenal, having played a game more. Meanwhile, Newcastle have 44 points from 26 games and sit just outside the top four on goal difference.

The Reds have a crucial Champions League Round of 16 tie against Paris Saint-Germain on the horizon. However, that is unlikely to distract them as they aim to strengthen their grip on the title race.

Newcastle, on the other hand, have an FA Cup fifth-round clash against Brighton looming. But with their top-four ambitions reignited, they will be fully focused on securing points here.

Read on for our in-depth analysis and predictions.

Liverpool - Newcastle: Form Analysis

Liverpool secured a 2-0 victory away at Manchester City last weekend, effectively extinguishing the title hopes of Arsenal and City. However, the Reds will be seeking greater consistency, having won just two of their last five competitive matches.

In the Premier League, they have won twice and drawn twice in their last four outings. That said, they remain unbeaten in the league since mid-September, a run spanning 23 matches, with 16 wins.

Their last league defeat came against Nottingham Forest at Anfield, but since then, Liverpool have won eight and drawn two of their home league matches. Notably, they scored at least two goals in each of those games, setting the stage for more attacking action here.

Liverpool have won 22 of their last 24 home matches played on a Wednesday.

Newcastle, meanwhile, may find that a worrying statistic, having lost 13 of their last 17 away matches played on a Wednesday. However, they arrive at Anfield in high spirits following a thrilling 4-3 home victory over Nottingham Forest. That was just their second win in five league matches, helping them edge closer to the top four.

Surprisingly, Newcastle have performed well on the road recently, winning four of their last five league trips. That said, they lost their most recent away game and have not won a league match at Anfield since April 1994, drawing five and losing 23 in that time.

Liverpool & Newcastle Squad Analysis

Cody Gakpo made a brief appearance for Liverpool on Sunday, leaving them with just three injured players. Conor Bradley, Joe Gomez, and Tyler Morton are all unavailable for this match.

At the Etihad, Arne Slot deployed two number 10s, with Curtis Jones and Dominik Szoboszlai dictating play against Manchester City. The Hungarian scored and provided an assist in that game, and it would be a major injustice if he were to be replaced by Gakpo.

The Egyptian has scored and assisted in 49 league matches across Europe's top five leagues, including the reverse fixture and three of Liverpool's last four games.

This match features the league’s top two scorers this season - Salah (25) and Isak (19).

With next weekend off due to their absence from the League Cup, Liverpool can afford to field their strongest XI. That could mean another opportunity for Salah to find the net and reach 10 home and away goals in a third separate Premier League campaign.

Isak has historically enjoyed playing against Liverpool and needs just two more goals to equal Andy Cole’s all-time Newcastle record of 12 away goals in the 1993/94 Premier League campaign.

On the injury front, Newcastle emerged from their clash with Nottingham Forest relatively unscathed. Defender Sven Botman could return from a minor knee injury in time for this trip. However, Jamaal Lascelles and Joelinton remain sidelined, with Eddie Howe hopeful of having them back in time for the EFL Cup final in March.

Our Liverpool vs Newcastle Prediction

Liverpool and Newcastle have historically produced high-scoring encounters, with nine of their last 13 meetings featuring at least three goals. Of those, eight have seen four or more goals, so this match could well be another thriller. Adding to the excitement, this season’s top two scorers, Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak, will both be on the pitch. Anfield will be hoping the Reds take another step towards the title with a clinical victory, while the Magpies will aim to push them all the way. With all these factors in play, our Liverpool vs Newcastle prediction is over 2.5.

Liverpool vs Newcastle Alternative Predictions

Alexander Isak to score anytime

Odds 2.95

Alexander Isak has 19 Premier League goals to his name this season, with only Mohamed Salah (25) having scored more. The Newcastle forward netted a brace against Nottingham Forest in his last match, making him the highest-scoring Swede in Premier League history with 50 goals. He has three goals and one assist in his five appearances against Liverpool, including one in each of the last two head-to-head encounters. Isak could well find himself on the scoresheet once again.
