Leylah Fernandez and Ekaterina Alexandrova will rekindle their rivalry this week in Ningbo. The two will meet in the quarter-finals for their second meeting of the season and sixth overall, and our prediction is for a three-setter.

Fernandez defeated Alexandrova in three sets last week in the first round in Wuhan. A Ningbo debutant, Fernandez has had to dig deep to qualify for the quarters.

The Canadian has seen almost every match she has played reach the three-hour mark. Her opening-round tie with Elise Mertens lasted two hours and 50 minutes while her last match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich went over three hours.

A winner of this year’s event in Singapore, Fernandez is up to 28th in the live ranking. 

Ekaterina Alexandrova hasn’t moved in the live ranking and still sits as the world number 33. A win here and she will move up two places, and if she does go on to win the tournament, she will catapult to the top 25.

Alexandrova, who is defending over 300 points this week, has had a strong start to her return to Ningbo. A finalist here last season, the Russian has won both matches she has played in straight sets.

Alexandrova saw off the challenge of third seed Marta Kostyuk in the last round. She took the first set 6-4 before Kostyuk retired through injury. Alexandrova has beaten Fernandez three times.
