Defending Champions Ivory Coast begin their title defense against Togo at the the Stade d'Oyem on Monday January 16. The Elephants made the 2017 AFCON after three draws and one victory in their qualifying group, which only had Sierra Leone and Sudan. Ivory Coast have played in the tournament 21 times, winning twice-in 1992 and 2015. For their most recent win, they had to wait for a round of penalties, which they won 9-8, in order to edge out Ghana in the final after beating DR Congo 3-1 in the semifinals. Togo are playing in this year’s tournament after finishing as one of the top runners up in the qualifiers. The Sparrow Hawks have played in the AFCON seven times before with their best performance coming in 2013 when they made the quarterfinals. Coach Claude Leroy has at least 12 players in his team who ply their trade in Europe, among them Fulham midfielder Floyd Ayite and forward Ihlas Bebou of German Bundesliga side Fortuna Düsseldorf. Also in the team are veteran players Emmanuel Sheyi Adebayor (32) and goalkeeper Kossi Agassa (38). The two senior players are currently not attached to any club.
