Top seed Iga Swiatek begins her Madrid Open campaign in the second round, facing off with unseeded Xiyu Wang. The winner will then play Alexandra Eala or Sorana Cirstea in the third round. Iga Swiatek has been a bit subpar lately and will be eager for a dominant showing in this match and tournament. The Pole is expected to win or at least make the final of every tournament she participates in. She however hasn’t been able to do so in her last two events. She was eliminated in the semi-finals in Stuttgart and denied a chance for a third successive title in the event. The world number one will hope this isn't the case again as she hopes to go one better than last season here in Madrid. Swiatek produced her best-ever result here last year as she finished as runner-up. Despite her underwhelming recent performances, Swiatek is still one of the in-form players in the WTA. She has compiled a 26-4 record and has won the two finals she has contested.

Xiyu Wang is defending 65 points won in her run to the third round in Madrid last year. It was a strong debut showing and is now only one win away from equaling this feat. Wang defeated Anna Bogdan in a marathon match in the first round that lasted for three hours and 12 minutes. A total of 34 games were played and the first two sets each had a tiebreaker played. The 23-year-old will hope to have enough energy left to take on one of the game’s dominant players. Wangu has won 13 of 23 matches in 2024 and has produced one runner-up finish in Austin. She was also a semifinalist in Auckland at the start of the year. Despite earning 10 points from her first-round victory, Wang has dropped one place to 53rd in the live ranking.
