Top seed Iga Swiatek has advanced to yet another Indian Wells semifinal and will battle the in-form 31st seed Marta Kostyuk. The winner here will take on either Cori Gauff or Maria Sakkari in the final. For the third season in a row, Iga Swiatek has made it to the last four at this WTA 1000 tournament. She claimed the title two seasons ago and was eliminated in this very round last year. Failing to defend her title was a big disappointment and she will be eager to get the job done this time around. Swiatek has been at her dominant best once again this season and has won 18 of the 20 matches she has contested. All 20 fixtures have taken part on hard courts with only two of her wins requiring a decider. The world number one triumphed in Doha and won the United Cup as part of the Polish team. Yet to lose a set in this tournament, Swiatek overcame the challenge of former world number one Caroline Wozniacki in the last round. Wozniacki, a former Indian Wells champion, was forced to retire early in the second set. Swiatek defeated Kostyuk 2-0 in their only previous encounter three seasons ago at the French Open.

Marta Kostyuk is also having a superb season and will arrive for this match fully confident of causing an upset. The Ukrainian has compiled a 15-5 record and all 20 matches have been contested on hard courts. She has produced a runner-up finish in San Diego and made the quarterfinals at the Australian Open. Her run to the last eight in Melbourne was the first time she had advanced that far at a major. Now she has set another career record in WTA 1000 events by advancing to this round. Before this season, Kostyuk had never gone past the third round at any 1000 tournament. In her previous three appearances at Coachella, the 21-year-old has been eliminated twice in the second round. Last season she was dumped out at the first hurdle. She is now one win away from making it to successive finals this season. Kostyuk, who was handed a walkover by Marketa Vondrousova in the third round, defeated Anastasia Potapova in the quarters. She won in straight sets with the first set ending 6-0. Advancing to this round has propelled her up six places to 26th in the live ranking, a new career high.
