Top seed Iga Swiatek faces qualifier Danielle Collins in the last eight of the National Bank Open. The winner of this match will take on either Jessica Pegula or Coco Gauff in the semi-finals. Swiatek is confirmed to be still world number one at the end of this WTA 1000 outdoor hard court event. Only reaching the last eight was needed for her to do so. There was a long wait to do that though due to the rain in Montreal. The Pole had a nine hour delay before defeating Karolina Muchova in three sets in a repeat of their Roland Garros final earlier this year. Before that match, Swiatek had beaten Karolina Pliskova in straight sets in their second round match. The 22-year-old has won four WTA titles this year. The most recent of those was in Warsaw last month when winning the hard court title after winning five matches in straight sets. 21 of her last 23 matches have been won, the only losses being at Wimbledon and when withdrawing from the Bad Homburg Open.
Danielle Collins was ranked 48th at the start of this tournament. This run to the last eight in Montreal has taken her up to 34th in the live rankings and she could yet be seeded at the US Open. Collins had to qualify to get into the main draw and had to go to three sets in both of her matches to get through. In the main draw, the 29-year-old has beaten Elina Svitolina (who beat Swiatek at Wimbledon), eighth seed Maria Sakkari and wild card Leylah Fernandez, all without dropping a set. Collins has beaten Swiatek before, getting a win in the 2022 Australian Open. That's her only win in three matches against the world number one. The most recent was in Dubai this year with Swiatek only dropping one game. Collins will hope to do better here but our tip is for Swiatek to win in straight sets.
