East African side Uganda starts its Africa Cup of Nations duty against African powerhouse Ghana on at the Stade de Port Gentil on Tuesday 17 January. The Black Stars, who have played in the AFCON 20 times and won four times, were the runners up in the last edition, after they lost to Ivory Coast in post-match penalties. In all the years that Ghana have played in the AFCON, they have never failed to make it past the group stage and have made the semifinals in the past five straight tournaments. To qualify for the Gabon event, Ghana won our and drew twice. Uganda have played in the AFCON six times before, and the closest they have come to winning it was in 1978, when they reached the semifinals. Uganda made the AFCON as one of the best runners up. The won four games, drew one and lost one of their qualification matches. The two sides have met four times before, each winning once, and settling for draws twice. Most recently, they met in a World Cup qualifier in October last year, a match that ended on a barren draw.
