Third seed Frances Tiafoe and the wildcard Shang Juncheng meet again at tour level and will square off this time in Hong Kong. They will battle in the quarterfinals with the winner next playing either Marc-Andrea Husler, Arthur Fils, Andrey Rublev, or Liam Broady. Frances Tiafoe began his campaign here in the last round and defeated Miomir Kecmanovic in straight sets. It was the perfect way to start his season and he will be eager to keep this momentum going. Having defeated Juncheng in both of their previous meetings, Tiafoe will be confident of advancing to the semis. The American, ranked 16th in the ATP, won both encounters with Juncheng last season which were all played on hard courts.

Shang Juncheng has started his season strongly and will arrive for his first big match of the year confident of success. The Chinese world number four started things off in Hong Kong in the first round and has won both his matches in three sets. He defeated seventh seed Laslo Djere in the opening round and then Botic van de Zandschulp last time out. The current world number 183 is now preparing to play in his maiden quarterfinal at tour level. Juncheng compiled a 31-23 record last season and won 21 matches on hard courts though played predominantly in the challenger circuit.
