The Swiss Super League gets underway this weekend, and kicking off the action on Friday night are FC Zurich, who host FC Sion in the opening match of the season. Last season saw both FC Zurich and Sion in the relegation playoff after finishing in the bottom half of the table during the regular Swiss season. Zurich ended the regular season finishing eighth, amassing 47 points, whereas FC Sion finished ninth with 36. By the end of the season. Following the playoffs, Zurich improved to seventh place, with 53 points, whereas FC Sion remained in ninth place, with 54 points.
Heading into this game, FC Zurich had been in positive form, recording four friendly wins over Juventus Zurich (4-1 at home), followed by three away wins: 2-0 at Rapperswil-Jona, 3-1 at FC Wil 1900, and 2-0 at Magdeburg. However, they were beaten 3-0 in their most recent game away to German side SSV Ulm 1846.
Sion's form wasn't quite as impressive. A 2-0 home win over Neuchâtel Xamax was followed by a 1-1 home draw with Thun before two defeats, a 5-2 thrashing by Zenit St. Petersburg and a 3-0 home loss to Grasshopper. However, they did round off their pre-season with a 3-0 home win over Annency.
