Sunderland and Everton will be looking to recover from disappointing results in midweek activity when they shift gears to the FA Cup. Everton will play host in this third-round match, welcoming Sunderland to the Hill Dickinson Stadium. This will mark the second meeting between the two sides this season. It is also the first cup meeting featuring the teams since their League Cup clash back in 2017. Read on to find our prediction of the match below.
The last FA Cup meeting between the two teams dates back to 2012, and it was Everton who carried the day, with a 2-0 away win. Coming into this one, both sides are looking to return to winning ways, Everton having drawn their Wednesday game and Sunderland coming from a heavy loss.
Both will definitely welcome some FA Cup distraction, as tough runs in the league have left them separated by two places and being one point apart.

Everton - Sunderland: Form Analysis
Everton will consider their 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers as two dropped points as they continue to endure an inconsistent campaign. Viewed from another angle, the Toffees will welcome the point earned at home, as they finished the game with nine men.
While all that is now confined to the past, a run of just one win in six matches should be a concern. Everton have lost three of those six games and also failed to score three times. This, though, is a fixture they’ve dominated, and they will want to extend the same here. Everton haven't lost to Sunderland in their last four meetings, winning three.
Sunderland have only scored two goals across their last six away matches.
Sunderland suffered one of their biggest defeats of the season in midweek. Their recent five-match unbeaten run was brought to a halt in a 3-0 defeat at in-form Brentford. The Black Cats had earlier posted four straight draws.
Having managed just two wins in their last 10 matches could pose some tough questions for Regis Le Bris’ side. Having collected points from Liverpool, Newcastle United, and Manchester City in the process, they will feel capable of standing up against the Toffees. However, away from home, they are winless in the last six games, losing three and failing to score in four.

Everton & Sunderland Squad Analysis
Everton will be seriously depleted for this encounter after seeing two players sent off against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Michael Keane and Jack Grealish picked up red cards in the match, ruling them out of this.
The Toffees are also deprived of Idrissa Gueye and Iliman Ndiaye’s services, as the two are away at the African Cup of Nations with Senegal. This game comes too soon for Carlos Alcaraz, and it finds Jarrad Branthwaite is still recovering from a hamstring injury. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Seamus Coleman are also out with similar injuries.
Sunderland’s Ajibola Alese is set to complete a year out with a shoulder injury.
Sunderland will be a bit luckier on the available players’ front. Most of their unavailable players due to AFCON are back. Mozambique’s Reinildo Mandava and the Congolese duo of Arthur Masuaku and Noah Sadiki are all expected to feature here.
Bertrand Traore’s Burkina Faso has also been eliminated, and he could be available for this game. Habib Diarra and Chemsdine Talbi are, however, still at the tournament, while Wilson Isidor is out injured.

Our Everton vs Sunderland Prediction
Everton have been struggling on the attacking front in recent matches. It was expected, with Iliman Ndiaye, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and Idrissa Gueye all out. The three have a combined goal involvement of 14, and their absence has been a massive blow.
Sunderland are also experiencing a low return of goals, which hasn’t been helped by Wilson Isidor’s absence. While these players’ absence affects the teams, they’ve generally not been great in attack this season. With that, our prediction for Everton v Sunderland is for less than 2.5 goals.
