The 2026 FIFA World Cup is now within touching distance, and England will continue their preparation for the global tournament on Friday, when they take on Uruguay at Wembley Stadium. The Three Lions are fourth in FIFA’s latest world rankings, while La Celeste are in 17th place. Check out our match prediction below!
England stormed through their 2026 World Cup qualifiers and are now one of the pre-tournament favourites to win football’s grandest prize for the first time since 1966. This month’s friendlies will provide some of the nation’s fringe players a chance to impress Thomas Tuchel and secure a spot in the squad for the tournament in North America in the summer.
Uruguay got through the CONMEBOL qualifiers in fourth place, but their performances were far from convincing, leaving Marcelo Bielsa with plenty of work to do before the World Cup. The Sky Blues last faced England in 2014 and won the match 2-1, marking their third WC victory over the English. Let’s get into the key stats!

England - Uruguay: Form Analysis
England firmly announced themselves as one of the teams to watch at this year’s World Cup by delivering a flawless qualifying campaign, topping Group K (UEFA) with eight wins in eight matches.
The Three Lions scored 22 goals during the qualifiers, but the most impressive part of their performance was that they were the only team from 54 participants to not concede a single goal.
Tuchel’s side have now won 14 of their last 16 matches across all competitions dating back to September 2024, with their only defeats in that time coming against Greece and Senegal in friendlies.
England have kept clean sheets in six of their last seven home games across all competitions!
Meanwhile, Uruguay are set to feature in their fifth consecutive FIFA World Cup this year, having finished in fourth place in the CONMEBOL qualifiers with 28 points from their 18 matches (W7 D7 L4).
Since then, La Celeste have played four international friendlies, in which they beat the Dominican Republic and Uzbekistan, before drawing against Mexico and losing 5-1 to the USA last November.
Los Charruas have not been great on the road in recent times, winning only one of their last 10 away games across all competitions (D6 L3). They have not won a competitive away match since July 2024.

England & Uruguay Squad Analysis
Tuchel named a 35-man squad for this month’s friendlies, but 11 of those players will only feature for the second match against Japan, including the likes of Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, Anthony Gordon and Dan Burn, among others.
Man United duo Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo are back in the Three Lions’ squad, Ben White returns for the first time in four years, and Everton’s James Garner, along with Jason Steele of Brighton, have earned first-time call-ups.
In Kane’s absence, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Dominic Solanke and Jarrod Bowen will be competing for the number nine role for the home side. Eberechi Eze and Jarell Quansah both withdrew from the squad in the lead-up, while Reece James and Trevoh Chalobah were ruled out through injury.
Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ollie Watkins did not make the cut for this month’s internationals!
Former Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez was Uruguay’s top scorer during the CONMEBOL qualifiers with five goals, and he will likely lead the line for the visitors alongside Liga MX outfit Club America forward Brian Rodriguez.
La Celeste have two Premier League players in their ranks for this match in Manuel Ugarte and Santiago Bueno. La Liga stars Ronald Araujo and Jose Maria Gimenez, as well as Panathinaikos midfielder Facundo Pellistri, are all in contention to make the starting lineup.
One player that could be key for the visitors here is their skipper, Federico Valverde, who has been in excellent form of late, scoring six goals in his last five matches across all competitions, including a first-half hat-trick against Man City in the UCL RO16.

Our England vs Uruguay Prediction
While Uruguay lead the head-to-head standings against England, winning three of their last five encounters, they have not been good on the road of late, winning only one of their last 10 away games since September 2024.
England, on the other hand, enter this match following a remarkable World Cup qualification campaign in which they won all eight of their matches without conceding a single goal. The Three Lions have not lost a competitive home game since October 2024, and we feel they will add to that record with another victory in this one. Our England vs Uruguay prediction is England wins.
England vs Uruguay Alternative Predictions
England over 1.5
England scored two or more goals in seven of their eight 2026 World Cup qualifiers, including in each of their four home games during that tournament.
Jarrod Bowen to score or assist
Jarrod Bowen has recorded a direct goal contribution in nine of his last 10 games for West Ham United, and he could be a key to England’s attack here in the absence of Harry Kane.
