England face a tricky game against Japan as the teams look to finalise their squads before announcing the 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This international friendly on Tuesday at Wembley between the ‘Three Lions’ and the ‘Samurai Blue’ comes with our prediction of both teams scoring goals.
Thomas Tuchel has already announced his intentions to rotate the squad, although a few regulars will be back in contention here. There are high hopes from the fans as England breezed through their qualifiers and have an easy group in the World Cup, paired with Croatia, Ghana, and Panama in Group L.
Japan are slowly making a name for itself and have also qualified with ease. Hajime Moriyasu’s side are a dark horse in the summer tournament, where they will be in Group F along with the Netherlands, Tunisia, and either Poland or Sweden. It won’t be an easy game for England, but can Japan go all the way and shock their European counterparts? Read more for our analysis, team news, and match predictions.

England - Japan: Form Analysis
England had a below-par game in a 1-1 draw against Uruguay at Wembley on Friday, conceding a late penalty. It was their first failure to win after six consecutive wins, each coming with a clean sheet.
Tuchel’s side will hope to get back to their defensive best ahead of finalising the squad for the World Cup. The ‘Three Lions’ have won each of their last five matches at Wembley without conceding a goal, although that record could be put to test here.
England are unbeaten in three games against Japan (W2, D1).
This is the first fixture between these sides since 2010, though, and Japan have improved by leaps and bounds since then. They edged Scotland on Saturday, 1-0, in Glasgow, recording their fourth consecutive win in friendlies.
The Japanese have scored two or more goals in four of their last five matches, so this game could test England’s defensive strengths. The ‘Samurai Blue’ defeated Brazil last October and could fancy another major scalp to boost their confidence for the upcoming World Cup.

England & Japan Squad Analysis
Tuchel’s plans were hit with the withdrawal of Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, and Noni Madueke for this fixture. John Stones is another absentee, but the return of Harry Kane, Marc Guehi, and Elliot Anderson, among others, gives him a chance to field most of his first-choice players.
Tuchel’s 4-2-3-1 formation could see Kane starting upfront as the lone striker with the likes of Anthony Gordon, Morgan Rogers, and Jarrod Bowen likely to form the attacking midfield.
Kane has five goals in his last four national games.
Japan will be without Takehiro Tomiyasu, who pulled out of the squad prior to their previous game against Scotland. They have no new concerns and are likely to line up in their familiar 3-4-2-1 shape.
That would see Ayase Ueda of Feyenoord lining up as their lone striker. The impressive duo of Eintracht Frankfurt’s Ritsu Doan and Celtic’s Daizen Maeda are likely to be their creative outlets in the midfield. Junya Ito netted Japan’s winner against Scotland and could once again look to impress.

Our England vs Japan Prediction
England are one of the favourites for the 2026 World Cup but didn’t play like one against Uruguay. They limped through the game and ended up conceding a late penalty and sharing the spoils. Although coach Tuchel can lay claim to resting most of his regulars, they will be tested here by Japan. The ‘Samurai Blue’ are enjoying being one of the pre-tournament dark horses and will look to push their credentials here.
This match could end up being a tight one, and our England vs Japan prediction is BTTS.
England vs Japan Alternative Predictions
England wins
England have enough quality in their ranks to go for a win here, especially with the prolific Harry Kane set to start. The ‘Three Lions’ could be tested defensively, but it’s likely that they end up winning on the night.
