England and Chile will face off in Pool D of the 2023 Rugby World Cup this Saturday afternoon. The Red and Whites currently lead the pool with nine points after two matches, while Los Condores are at the bottom of the standings. While England have taken the lead in the group, there was major concern over their chances coming into the tournament. They had a very poor Six Nations campaign which saw them drop to fourth from third last year. Steve Borthwick’s side lost the Calcutta Cup in the first match of that tournament, but the alarm bells increased in volume when they were beaten by Fiji in the warm-up matches. Nevertheless, they will be feeling much better about themselves now, having beaten Argentina 27-10 in their first match and overcoming Japan 34-12 last weekend. England’s game plan has been evident as they have depended on the kicking game to keep their opponents pegged back in their own half. While their strategy is plain to see, it has proven effective, and they will be firmly expected to win this one with a bonus point. 

Meanwhile, Chile come into this one following back-to-back defeats in their first two matches. They went down 42-12 against Japan in week one and then lost 43-10 to Samoa last week. While those defeats look big, they do not tell the full story. Chile were well in both those matches until halftime, but they were unable to maintain the pressure across the 80 minutes, and their opponents managed to pull away. However, they now face their most difficult opponent to date and fair to say not many are giving them much of a chance here. The South Americans have failed to win any of their last five matches in all competitions. Their last win came over Romania back in November last year. Chile are the lowest-ranked team in the competition and the out-and-out outsiders to qualify for the knockout stages. It could be a long afternoon for them against the kicking game of England.
