Empoli are only out of the bottom three in Serie A on goal difference after earning just four points from their opening five league games. After a disappointing end to last season that saw them lose their last three league games, they started well this term with a 2-0 home win over Cagliari. That's their only win so far though and their next game saw them 2-0 down at Genoa inside 18 minutes, eventually losing 2-1. They failed to score in their next two games, drawing 0-0 at bottom of the table Chievo and losing 1-0 at home to Lazio. The weekend saw them lose again being defeated 3-1 at Sassuolo even after taking a surprise first minute lead. Empoli's home league record sees them just two wins in their last ten games.

Milan have a good record playing Empoli and 10 away league games against them in the past 21 years have seen them undefeated. They haven't made a good start to this season though and only have five points but have played a game less than other teams. They'll certainly remember their opening league game as they took a shock 2-0 lead at Napoli before losing 3-2. Their only league win came when a 95th miinute goal gave them a 2-1 win over Roma. Milan then travelled to Cagliari and had to come from behind to get a 1-1 draw. The weekend was another frustrating one for Milan as they twice led at home to Atalanta but saw a 91st minute goal rob them of the three points as they drew 2-2. Away form is a problem with only one win in six games but they have a good record here and with Empoli struggling for form, they can get an important away win here.
