Ekaterina Alexandrova and sixth seed Jelena Ostapenko will rekindle their rivalry when they battle next at the Adelaide International. The two will square off in the semifinals with the winner facing either Jessica Pegula or Daria Kasatkina for the title. This is the ninth career meeting between these two. Ekaterina Alexandrova has won five of the previous eight with two of her wins coming on hard courts. Coupling this with her exceptional showing here, the Russian will be confident of advancing to her first tour final of the year. Alexandrova, who is making her third successive Adelaide appearance, has won two of her three rounds without dropping a set. The last win was particularly impressive as it was against top seed Elina Rybakina. She lost six games in the duel to hand Rybakina her first loss of the season. Alexandrova is now up to 20th in the live ranking.

Jelena Ostapenko won the last time that she was paired up against Alexandrova. This was four months ago in San Diego. The Latvian has now won two of the last four encounters with her soon-to-be opponent with one of those coming on hard courts. Advancing to this round has seen Ostapenko return to the WTA top 10 and is ranked 10th in the live ranking. She defeated Marta Kostyuk by the loss of eight games to register her first straight sets win of the tournament. Ostapenko played in only two semifinals last season and won one. This was in Birmingham where she triumphed to win her sixth tour title.
