The Democratic Republic of Congo take to the Stade d'Oyem, in Oyem for their first Africa Cup of Nations Group C match. Congo are currently ranked sixth in the continent after dropping one position in the most recent international football standings table released by Fifa. Morocco retained their 10th place position in the monthly account. The Atlas Lions qualified for the AFCON finals with 16 points in their qualifiers after winning five times and drawing once. Coached by Herve Renard, Morocco overcame Cape Verde, Libya and Sao Tome to progress. Congo, on their part, managed 15 points, from five wins and one loss to rise ahead of the Central African Republic, Angola and Madagascar. Of the two sides, Congo are more experienced at this level of competition, having qualified 17 times and winning the cup twice. Morocco have played in the AFCON 15 times before winning it once-in 1976. Frenchman Renard is a celebrated coach, having won the AFCON with Zambia in 2012 and with Ivory Coast in 2015, becoming the first man to win two AFCON titles with different nations. 18 of the 23 players on Congo coach Florent Ibenge’s squad ply their trade in Europe. Renard is not taking chances either and 20 of Morocco’s selected players come from various European clubs.
